Chapter One: Pain and Suffering

It was pitch black, the pounding rain had stopped and the rumbling sounds of thunder could be heard far off in the distance now. The insects, frogs and other nocturnal creatures had begun their normal nightly concert and a cool, calm mountain breeze wafted over the area carrying the scent of fresh rain.Cole still couldn’t move as he lay paralyzed on his stomach, head turned and staring at the empty cliff where just moments ago the only two people left that mattered to him in this world had been taken away. He battled with a plethora of emotions all vying for his immediate attention, but one thought kept overpowering his primal urges to rant and rave. It was something he had told his girls many times: self-pity is for the weak.Suddenly his attention was grabbed by a dark clad man heading for the edge of the cliff holding a sniper rifle over his left shoulder. The assassin was wearing a large black back pack, night vision goggles and what appeared to be a small video camera atop his head attached to the NVG harness. He stopped at its edge, appeared to be scanning the range below for a few seconds and then scratched his head before turning towards the two bodies lying motionless on the grassy bluff.Cole fought the rage that was building up inside him, knowing that he was completely helpless right now and better off to just play dead. He stopped his breathing and fixed an unblinking one mile stare. The hit man approached him and Cole noticed how silent and cat-like his walk was; definitely a well-trained killer. He crouched down in front of Cole using his rifle to support him.“Well now, what do we have here?” Viper pulled out his k-bar and used the blade to push Cole’s hood back revealing a very youthful looking man with gray brain matter and blood covering his well-tanned face. The victim’s hair was bright white and his eyes were still open; staring off into nothingness.
